  • July 23: Mission Trip to Tucson, AZ, with Humane Borders
On July 23rd, we will be departing from the San Jose airport early in the morning to go to Tucson, AZ. We will meet with the Humane Borders organization to learn about border issues, including the history, dilemmas, and legalities facing migrants and locals in the American Southwest. We will return on July 30th. Humane Borders is hosted by our ecumenical partner, First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, where the participating youth and young adults will be sleeping and preparing their meals. In addition to visiting with various speakers, educators and workers on both sides of this issue, our high school students and young adults will be filling water tanks in the desert of Arizona to help curb the tide of migrants who die of dehydration. Yes, filling the water tanks is certainly legal and Humane Borders has permits requiring them to fill these water tanks. In addition to the justice issue of providing water to help prevent death by dehydration of migrants, many border patrol agents and local property owners who disagree with illegal migration want water stations on public and private property in order to decrease the number of dead bodies they personally have to dispose of. We look forward to our trip to the Southwest and to seeing all of you in our send-off blessing during the Sunday morning worship service on July 20th.
