Our Church in Action
These are just some examples of activities we have going on at the church throughout the year. Click on a thumbnail to see more pictures from an event.
Choir Concert
Our chancel choir puts on a concert each spring of both secular and non-secular music.
Crop Walk
Each spring, our church participates in the Crop Hunger Walk to help raise funds for hunger relief.
Open and Affirming
First Congregational Church of San Jose is an open and affirming congregation. The central affirmation of an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation is that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people are welcome in the full life and ministry of the church.
Fall All-Church PicnicEvery year on the second Sunday after Labor Day, we have a picnic after church to kick off the new school year. There's a barbecue, bingo, a bounce house, cotton candy, games for the children, and more. It's a lot of fun!
Easter Egg Hunt
We have an Easter egg hunt every year for the children in between our two Easter Sunday services.
Trunk-or-Treat at HalloweenOn the Sunday immediately before Halloween, members of the congregation can park their cars in the back parking lot and decorate them with Halloween decorations. Then, after church, the children go from car to car "trunk-or-treating." It's great fun for young and old alike!
Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley
We are very involved with Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley, an organization dedicated to rehabilitating the homes of low income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, so that they may live in warmth, safety and independence.
Softball
Our church co-ed softball team plays nearly every Friday in the spring and summer.
Blessing of the Animals
We hold our worship service in Fellowship Hall once a year to accommodate all the dogs, cats, birds, rats, stuffed animals, etc., that our congregation brings to be blessed.
Talent/No Talent ShowEvery year on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras), we put on a Talent/No Talent Show in which everyone can participate, whether they have any talent or not! There is always lots of dessert following the show.
Adult Education ForumsWe present several adult education forums throughout the year on various topics. We also occasionally have speakers come to the church, such as Bart Ehrman and Bishop John Shelby Spong, and discuss their books over the weeks before and after their visits.
PACT (People Acting in Community Together)
First Congregational Church of San Jose has a joint PACT local organizing committee (LOC) with Cambrian Park United Methodist Church. We are working to eliminate bullying behavior in our local schools. PACT consists of 24 congregations, including Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Muslim organizing on issues of school reform, health care reform, bank accountability, and human rights for all people no matter what their ethnicity, zip code, sexual orientation, or legal status. You are welcome to join us even if you do not attend First Congregational Church. For more information, see www.PACTsj.org.
